This project sums up who we are. All of us joined this
wonderful collection of controlled insanity for various reasons but
with a common goal; to meet great people and make a difference. We have
achieved that goal.
Credit Where Credit
is Due
Club member John Graham first approached the club last month with an
idea for building a new and larger parrot house at the Pelican Man's
sanctuary. Not only did he pitch the idea, he had already drawn up plans
and put together a feasible budget. His enthusiasm was overwhelming
and the "Not-Bored" members unanimously embraced the project.
This club has been involved in many wonderful events to help raise awareness
for various charities, but we never had to build anything literally
from the ground up. What to do? Time to put it on the Coconut Telegraph.

Answering the Call of Nature
The call went out via email to any member who could hold a saw
or hammer a nail and the call was answered. Over 30 members showed up
at the sanctuary over a two week period to begin construction on the
house. The first stage involved clearing out the space needed, placing
10 frame posts three feet into the ground and filling in the foundation
with a wire mesh covered with sand. The Pelican Man staff joined in
and poured a custom cement watering pond complete with a new irrigation
system for fresh water. We were on our way.

Trying to Reason
With the first stage complete it was time to bring in the rest of crew.
That following Saturday, a group of club members descended on the sanctuary
like a pack of crazed Caribbean Amish. Saws were buzzing, hammers were
banging and voices were laughing. The feeling of being involved in something
really special was contagious, and soon everyone seemed to click in
an incredible rhythm. The speed of the construction was amazing; as
soon as one section was complete another section was ready to be installed.
Nothing could stop this project from being completed...then it rained.
Not just any rain, but the kind of rain that soaked the bone and made
Noah take notice. It rained hard for over an hour. Undeterred the crew
tried to press on and complete as much as they could, if only they had
another half-hour they'd be able to finish, but the weather turned sour
and much to the chagrin of the work force it was time to call it a day.
A New Day
John and a few dedicated members returned to the site on the
first clear day and completed the final touches to the project. The
on-site Veterinarian inspected the 3 parrots, Mr. & Mrs. Q and Reggie,
and determined they were ready to move into their new home. Rumor is
Reggie immediately took over and is acting like the new boss of the
place.
With Pride and Distinction
The amazing thing about this project is the fact that it was proposed,
planned and completed in under a month. The Pelican Man staff marveled
at the fact that of the many volunteers over the years, only the Parrotheads
were able to come in and complete a project with such efficiency and
determination. Even if you weren't able to help out this time, you should
feel proud. Proud of the fact that you belong to special group of great
people who made a difference. |
